Youth Challenges
Collect three fun items that you’re willing to part with. These items could be something like old board games, books, or toys. Donate these items to the kindergarten at the local women and children’s shelter.
Collect a non-perishable food item that you don’t need from your pantry. With the help of someone at home, “food share” the item so that someone in need might have it.
Get outside! You can go hiking or walking, spend some time meditating, or go cloud watching. If you want to try meditation, the Mindful Kids Youtube channel has free guided meditations. Share a picture of something interesting you saw while you were outside!
Take a trip to somewhere interesting in your town and try to learn something about the place you’re visiting. If visiting a physical location isn’t an option for you, take a virtual field trip. Share out something you’ve learned.
Looking at the list, sort each item as to whether you think it’s a boy thing, a girl thing, or neither:
Burping/ Farting
Rescuing
Dancing
Teaching
Cooking
Pink
Doctor
Nurse
Cars
Scientist
Blue
Cleaning
Lawyer
Engineer
Computer Programmer
Red
Glitter
Mathematician
Wearing the color pink
After you’re done sorting, take a minute or two to look back at your list. Where do you think your ideas of what is a boy/girl thing came from? Do you think it’s true that something can be just for boys or just for girls? How does it make you feel when professions, colors, toys, etc. are sorted into two categories? What do you think “gender equality” means? Would gender equality make a difference in the world? After you’ve reflected on the sorting activity and how it made you feel, try to make a creative interpretation of your feelings. This creative interpretation can be a painting, drawing, play, dance, etc. Share a picture of your creation!
With members of your household, brainstorm some ways that your family unit can conserve water. Try out at least two of the conservation tips you thought of.
The sun provides plants with power, and thanks to some smart people, humans are starting to harness the same energy to power our lives! Solar panels allow us to harness the sun’s energy to provide clean power to our homes. Take some time today to appreciate the power of the sun! You can try using a solar oven (directions found here) to melt some chocolate and enjoy some homemade chocolate fondue, take a picture of some solar panels out in your community, make some sun related art, or soak up the sun (wearing sunscreen of course!). Send a picture of your solar oven, sun art, or anything sun related you found in your community.
Have a conversation with your parents about what products they buy locally! After, share a photo of your favorite local store with 2-3 sentences describing what’s so great about it.
Choose a place that’s within walking distance of your home. Make three walking routes to your chosen place. Try out each one! Which of the routes is the fastest and safest route to take? Make a map that highlights your fast and safe path. How do you think the route could be improved? Share a picture of your map.
Out of the following list of words and ideas, choose one.
Inequality
Socioeconomic status
Prejudice
Discrimination
Racism
Imbalance of power
Take some time to research your chosen term. What did you find out? Did you already know what your term meant or was the term new to you? Did you find a definition that surprised you? Reach out to someone your age who has a different background and share what you learned with them.
Help your city lessen its impact on the world! You can do this by helping to conserve energy in your home. Watch this video about how to save energy in the home. Try out some of their suggestions to see how much energy you can save in your home!
Choose an area (road/park/etc.) and pick up all the plastic or unbroken glass bottles that you can find. Take your collected items to your local recycling center.
In Russia, an average of 56 kilos of food per person are thrown away every year. The production of food requires natural resources (like land and water), effort, and energy to create. When we throw out our food, we are wasting the resources and effort that went into creating it! Try reducing the amount of food that you throw out! Some ways might include taking smaller portions, using leftovers to create a new meal, or starting a compost with your family. Share a picture of one of the ways you reduced your food waste for this challenge.
Choose an educational video about ocean conservation. Share which one you watched and a fun fact from the documentary!
Trees are very important! They help regulate our climate by removing carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere. How do trees become tall and leafy? Just like you were once a baby, a tree started out as a seed. The different life stages of a tree are: seed, sprout, seedling, sapling, mature, decline, and snag. Here’s a link to a cool video that discusses how trees grow. After you’ve learned a little bit more about the tree life stages, try to make a creative interpretation of the tree life cycle! You could make a skit, drawing, or song (among other things) to creatively represent your tree life cycle.
How do you (or could you) stand up for peace? Think of a few different ways that you could promote peace in your own life. Try sharing your steps towards peace with others: you could have a conversation, make a video, or create a piece of art.
Think about which challenge you had the most fun doing. What about that activity did you like so much? Reach out to a friend and tell them about what the SDGs are and what your favorite challenge was. Challenge them to try out your favorite activity with you. How did the activity change when you did it with someone else? Do you have any thoughts on teamwork?
Make sure that you stay safe and healthy while completing these challenges! Wear a face mask, follow social distancing guidelines, and make sure to wash your hands often. Make sure that an adult in your life knows where you are and what you are doing. Don't forget to track your progress throughout this challenge on a sticker board! Have fun and be safe!
